Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is the name of a toxin created by the bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum. Small, diluted amounts of this substance are injected into targeted muscles. This action causes a controlled relaxation of the affected muscles.

How does Botox work?

Botox blocks signals from your nerves to your muscles. As a result, injected muscles aren’t able to contract as forcefully. This causes wrinkles to relax and soften. Botox is regularly used to diminish:

  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Lines in the nose
  • Skin bands on the neck
  • Skin bands around the mouth
  • Downturned corners of the mouth

Botox doesn’t fill your existing wrinkles. It simply relaxes the muscles that are causing your skin issues/

How is a Botox injection administered?

Dr. Gao utilizes a fine needle to inject Botox into targeted muscles. No anesthesia is necessary. The procedure is complete in a few minutes. Dr. Gao may recommend you quit taking aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs 2 weeks before your Botox treatment. You should also abstain from alcoholic beverages 1 week prior to your appointment with Dr. Gao.

How long does a Botox injection last?

After receiving a Botox injection, expect to see natural and younger looking skin within 24-72 hours. Your treatment should last 3-6 months. When your muscles become active again, your lines and wrinkles will likely reappear. To maintain your youthful appearance, you’ll need to schedule additional Botox injections with Dr. Gao. Fortunately, after receiving repeated injections, your lines and wrinkles may appear less noticeable. Your muscles become trained to relax.

What is Juvederm?

Unlike Botox, Juvederm is a facial filler. During a Juvederm injection, your problem areas are filled with hyaluronic acid, which is a natural part of your skin’s connective tissue. Because of its safety and effectiveness, hyaluronic acid is the most popular filler utilized in aesthetic medicine. As you age, your lips become thinner. Dr. Gao administers Juvederm injections to help patients achieve fuller, youthful looking lips. Juvederm can also minimize the folds between your nose and your mouth. Smokers often develop tiny wrinkles above their lips. Juvederm injections can fill in these bothersome wrinkles.
